Many many moons ago, I made a post about my March Doodle Challenge. That post was the beginning of something bigger than I could have ever foreseen. The Oodles of Doodles Challenge on Instagram has grown by hundreds of participants each month, and the support and encouragement from everyone is incredible.
I wasn’t sure how it would all play out so I didn’t make any blog posts about recent monthly challenges. But, I think it’s fair to say that Oodles of Doodles is here to stay. So, from now on, at the end of each month, I will be sharing a blog post with the details for the coming month’s doodle challenge. Hopefully, you’ll want to join in even if you aren’t an Instagram addict like myself.
August Doodle Challenge Theme and Rules
This month’s theme is: ‘at sea’.
For 31 days, you will doodle something nautical themed. You can do this in any fashion you like. I draw out a 31-grid spread in my bullet journal and then add the prompts on the same page. If you don’t want to draw out your own grid, I have a 31-day grid available for download in my VIP Resource Library. You can sign up to get access for free here.

Supplies in this post: Micron Pigma Fineliner, Tombow Fude Brush Pen, A5 Leuchtturm1917
Even if you don’t use a bullet journal, you are welcome to join this challenge. Add a spread to your sketchbook, notebook, or just start on a piece of paper.

July’s Doodle Challenge
As for the Rules…
Bum bum bum…
Just kidding. Take a breath. It’s a doodle challenge, not a contest. There are no prizes, except for your own sense of pride, which is pretty awesome if you ask me. The rules are guidelines. They don’t have to be followed. They’re just here to help guide you to complete the challenge while having fun.
- Starting on the 1st of the month, doodle to the corresponding prompt for the day. Do this to the best of your ability. Remember it’s not a contest and no one is judging you.
- Take a picture of your doodle and upload it to Instagram. Hashtag the photo with #oodlesofdoodleschallengeaug. Also, tag me, @the.petite.planner, so I can see your photo and leave you a comment.
- Search the hashtag on Instagram and leave some love for other people who are participating. Supporting others is highly encouraged.
- Complete one doodle a day for the entire month of August. When you’re all done, you’ll have a masterpiece of doodles.

Love this! I ran across it while looking for other bullet journal ideas and I am hooked! This is definitely something I want to include in my bullet journal every month. For the record, I am not much of an artist, but saw this challenge and thought it would be the perfect thing to help me improve my doodling skills especially now that I will be teaching kindergarten — it seems in kindergarten there are also plenty of opportunities to doodle with and for the students! Thank you and this is absolutely wonderful.

Great idea! I saw it on Pinterest and I will join next months challenge. I hope it will help me to improve my drawing skills 🙂 I would love to see maybe some kind of fall or forest theme.
