Whether you’re going with a floral journal theme or just wanting to doodle for a creative outlet, it’s easy to do a dandelion drawing. You can follow some easy steps to learn how to draw a dandelion!
Floral doodles are some of my favorite things to do when I’m just doodling for fun.
Dandelions are popular when it comes to journal and planner themes, but they can seem intimidating to draw. By breaking your drawing into steps, you can learn to draw everything from a simple dandelion drawing to a realist dandelion drawing!

DANDELION DRAWING – STEP BY STEP
Before you start your drawing of a dandelion, you might wonder what they represent and why they work well for journaling.
Yes, they’re fun to doodle, but also have wonderful meanings!
DANDELION MEANING
The dandelion has a number of different names. Some of the most popular include:
- blowball
- bitterwort
- cankerwort
- milk witch
- yellow gowan
- lion’s tooth
- swine’s snout
- Irish daisy
- white endive
- wild endive
- puffball
- priest’s crown
- clockflower
Most of us just regard it as a common weed. You may have childhood memories of making wishes as you blew the puffball away.
For creative purposes, the dandelion has some really wonderful meanings. Some of my favorites include:
- The bright yellow petals of the dandelion represent the sun shining down on all of the good in your life. The flower is a symbol of hope. It can also represent hope and healing. It also screams spring and summer to me, so it works well for those kinds of themes.
- The black seeds that we blow away are said to carry our wishes. This adds to the association with hope, positivity, and optimism. I feel like this is one of the most popular ways to draw dandelions.
- Dandelions often symbolize a free spirit, innocence, and playfulness.
- They can be seen as a symbol of hope and resilience because the plants are able to survive so much adversity while they grow.
You can see why dandelions are great for planning or just for drawing as a creative outlet!
HOW TO DRAW A DANDELION
There are three different types of dandelions to draw. You can do more of a dandelion doodle or go for a more realistic look. You will find step-by-step directions for each doodle below.
DOODLE SUPPLIES
You’ll need a few basic art supplies to get started.
- Pencil (you don’t have to use fancy drawing pencils, you can use a #2 pencil to get started if it’s what you have!)
- Drawing Pen (I recommend getting a set with some variety in the thickness of the nib so you have some options.)
- Eraser (White erasers are my favorite!)
- Paper/Sketchbook/Bullet Journal
You can also do digital doodles in Procreate using an iPad and Apple Pencil.
I have done dandelion drawings in both my journals and on my iPad.

SIMPLE DANDELION DRAWING
You can draw a simple dandelion drawing in five easy steps by following the drawing above.
STEP 1. Start by drawing a circle and then draw a curved line down from it.
STEP 2. Draw slightly curved lines out from the circle at the 12:00, 3:00, and 9:00 positions. Then draw lines between each of those.
STEP 3. Add shorter curved lines between each of the longer lines.
STEP 4. Draw colored dots at the end of each line.
STEP 5. Fill out the flower with additional lines to make it fuller. Add small dots to the end of any additional lines you add.

DANDELION DOODLE
This is another easy dandelion doodle that you can learn to draw. If you’re looking to use dandelions as a bullet journal theme, having a few variations on the doodle is super helpful.
STEP 1. Draw a circle. Then draw a stem by drawing two lines down from the circle.
STEP 2. Draw lines out from the center circle at the 12:00, 3:00, and 9:00 positions.
STEP 3. Add a line midway between each of the lines and the stem.
STEP 4. Add shorter lines between each of the longer lines.
STEP 5. Add a U shape to the end of each line.
STEP 6. Inside each use shape, add two lines.
STEP 7. Add tiny dots to the end of each line in the U shape.
STEP 8. Add additional shorter lines to fill out the flower and color in the center circle.
This dandelion is a bit more detailed. If you’re looking for something more realistic, the third tutorial below is for a realistic yellow dandelion flower.

REALISTIC DANDELION DRAWING
If you’re new to drawing and doodling, all it takes is practice to improve your skills. Follow the step-by-step instructions to do a realistic dandelion drawing.
STEP 1. Draw three petal shapes coming out to the left of the center of your paper.
STEP 2. Draw three more petals coming out to the right. Keep them about the same size as the ones on the left, but they do not have to be identical.
STEP 3. Draw three petal shapes going up from the top of the flower shape. Again, you can vary the size of them and they do not have to be identical to the other petals.
STEP 4. At the top of the flower, draw a few small petals behind the first row you drew in step 3.
STEP 5. Draw 3-4 smaller-sized petals at the bottom of the flower shape. Then in the middle draw one or two small curved lines to mark the center of the dandelion.
STEP 6. At the bottom and on the sides, add additional small petals behind the first row to fill out the flower.
STEP 7. Draw two skinny lines down from the center of the bottom of the flower for the stem. Then draw two lines going up and to the left off of the stem. Draw curvy lines to create a leaf coming off of the stem.
STEP 8. Add color, if desired!
This dandelion drawing is a bit more complicated, but by breaking it down into steps, you can learn to draw it!
