For me personally, habit tracking has been one of the most beneficial components of the bullet journal system. It allows me to be accountable for the actions I take on a daily basis.
But, the glory doesn’t come without moments of frustration and uncertainty.
Do I use a weekly habit tracker or a monthly tracker? Should I include all 22 habits or narrow it down? How much is too much and where’s my sweet spot? Is tracking these habits beneficial?
I can’t speak for you, but each month I doubt myself a little when making my habit tracker.
Because I have been the person that adds 20+ habits and I’ve been the person that left important stuff out of my tracker. And each month my habit tracker changes a little.
So, I’ve thought up a list of habit tracker ideas that you can reference and use the next time you are drawing your habit tracker. I have categorized the ideas on this list to make it easier to find habits that are relevant to your life and goals.
But first, let’s talk a little about what a habit tracker is and why it’s so important to keep one in your bullet journal.
What is a Habit Tracker and Why You Need One
A habit tracker is simply a chart, usually either set up for a week or a month that you use to keep track of daily habits and actions.
The most traditional habit tracker is set up with the days of the month spanning horizontally and the habits you are tracking vertically, like the one above. This setup is very functional, fits well in an A5 size journal, and can be decorated with a nice header or doodles.
However, with the evolution of the bullet journal, there have been many variations created. Some people choose to use circular habit trackers or create vertical habit trackers with icons that represent the habits along the top row (seen below). The options are endless.
So, what’s the big benefit?
When done correctly, meaning in a way that is relevant to your life and goals, it can help keep you accountable, keep you motivated, and push you towards achieving your goals. It can also help you keep track of things that you might otherwise forget about.
For example, if you want to lose 20 pounds in the next six months, you can track habits that are related to health and fitness. So, you could track if you avoided processed sugars, if you exercised, if you tracked your calories, or if you reached your daily step goal.
And who doesn’t want to reach their goals?
The best part is that you can modify the habit tracker to fit your needs. You can track whatever you want! But, in case you need some help with ideas, I’m here with a big freakin’ list!
If you are at all still confused about habit trackers, how to set them up, their purpose, check out this post.

Of course, there are probably at least 100 more habit tracker ideas out there! So, feel free to let me know what I missed or what you track in your habit tracker that wasn’t on the list. I’ll save them for another post next year, perhaps.
Also, I would love to know if you use a monthly or weekly habit tracker. Maybe you use both for different purposes. Let me know in the comments below.

I like to use both a weekly and a monthly tracker. I track things that I want to achieve every day in my weekly such as reading and skincare; then the things that I want to track but I know I wont achieve everyday I track in my monthly such as meeting up with friends. It helps me to see that I am achieving certain things at least a few times a month while also keeping me accountable week to week.

Naiomh, I have never thought of using that method, but it seems genius! A very nice way to keep track of different kinds of habits.
